All About Pet Brachypelma Smithi

Brachypelma Smithi or Mexican Red Leg are a well known tarantula that originates from Mexico. This species is one of the most wanted species in the pet trade. They have good colors, very docile, get large and live a long time. Female Brachypelma Smithi are known to live up to 30 years. Brachypelma Smithi are considered a burrowing species. They usually are found in softer soil banks with deep holes. Living thier life in a hole helps to protect them from certain preditory species. Females will sometimes spend thier whole life rarely leaving the burrow. Males will sometimes stay in a burrow till they have matured at which point they must leave to go and find themselves a mate. Brachypelma Smithi's main defence is urticating hairs. Mexican Red Knee will kick these hairs up in defence if a peditor approches.

Brachypelma Smithi Mating
Brachypelma smithi mate like most tarantulas. After the red knee male matures he will leave his burrow to go out and find a female brachypelma smithi. They will approach a burrow and start tapping to get the female to come out. If the female is receptive then she will allow him to hook up with her and mate. Sometimes the females are not ready and will see the male as food. Even after they mate the female brachypelma smithi might decide he will make a good snack if he does not get away fast enough.

Brachypelma Smithi Feeding
Brachypelma Smithi are oportunistic feeders. Although thier main diet consist of small bugs they will eat an occasional lizard or rodent that happens to pass too close to thier burrow. They are not picky when it comes to food.

Housing your Pet Brachypelma Smithi
A 10 gallon aquarium is usually addequate size for housing a full grown pet Mexican Red knee. Using a heat mat on one side of the cage to keep them warm enough in the cool season. A small water dish with a rock in it to keep your brachypelma smithi from getting in or the crickets from drowning. Humidity should be around 55%. Add a little hiding place for your Brachypelma Smithi like a flower pot cut in half.

Make sure to feed your tarantula atleast once a week. If they will eat more this is usually fine and they will grow faster if you feed them more. Sometimes your tarantula may not eat for a little while. This is usually not a concern for alarm it just means your Brachypelma Smithi is probably not hungry or is about to molt. Do not leave uneaten crickets in with your Mexican Red Knee as they might munch on your tarantula.
